Statement
I generally work from simple, schematic black and white drawings I have done on site
in city parks and beaches and on road trips. Painting from these drawings allows me to
re-imagine local color, form and perspective. I often combine drawings from different
locations into one painting.
Lately, l have been interested in things seen in passing, as from the corner of the
eye, and then reconstructed from memory in the studio.
I try to use a process that de-familiarizes mundane and everyday subjects. lt is my
hope that this process, which is improvisational and meditative, will imbue the work with
meaning that goes beyond formal concerns and engages the viewer's imagination.
There is an open-ended narrative aspect to many of my paintings, which relies on the
varied thoughts and moods of the viewer.
